So yeah, we're gonna do something love-related for this month... everyone loves or hates or is apathetic about Valentine's Day and I thought I already wrote this out but I didn't so I'm not prepared and it's the 1st already!

But I have the idea...

Ready?

Write a story about something you* love so much and want so bad but can't have it.

*You can be either yourself (1st person POV) or an MC (3rd person), either is fine.

:bulletpink: Emphasis on the word "something".
:bulletpink: IT CANNOT BE ANOTHER LIVING BEING.
:bulletpink: IT HAS TO BE AN INANIMATE OBJECT OR CONCEPT!!
:bulletpink: And give us a cool/funny/mind-blowingly wtf or sad reason why it is out of reach.

Why?
One, because it's my group (but it's here for you).  There are, I'm sure, other prompt groups out there doing the same old thing because they are the same old thing.  You're here because you want something else.  Two, because writing about unrequited love is boring and I don't want to read it or subject anyone else to it.  Boring is subjective, yes, but come on.  I'm here to make you think harder than "omg i love that guy but he's got a girlfriend and he doesn't know i'm alive boohoowahh" -- no.  Not interested.

So what am I looking for?
Show us longing.  Show passion.  Show why the POV of choice entity loves and wants what they want so bad and why they can't have it AND/OR what would happen if they did have it.  You don't have to make the reader want it but you have to make the reader understand why the main character loves and wants it so bad.  The reason why they can't have it should be intense.  Because they don't have the money for it isn't good enough.  They HAVE TO HAVE IT.  What are they willing to do to get it?  LOL then they still don't get it... or do they... no.  They don't.  Something else happens instead to make it even more brutal.

Give yourself something to write.  Give us something to read.

What can it be?
Anything as long as it doesn't breathe.  Anything that doesn't bleed when it's cut.  Anything that doesn't have a heartbeat.  It can be a concept (like a life-long dream of some sort).  It can be an actual inanimate object.  It doesn't even have to be anything too crazy.  It just has to be something that was never birthed from another living creature.  I hope this is clear.  If not, I'm here to answer your questions, as always.  You know I will always work with you to hammer out ideas.

Other necessary guidelines
It can be a full story or vignette:
750-1250 words for a vignette, 1500-2000 for a full story.
Any genre.  1st or 3rd person.  You know I don't read 2nd person.
Due on 2-28-2013 either in a note here or my personal page.
Please don't forget to link back to the group with the prompt number.

Leave further questions here in the comments and/or in a note to me.

Do our stories have to occur on Valentine's Day? Do we have to specifically talk about Valentine's Day and/or romance?

if you'd like. it is not a requirement. please read the entire prompt again. i only mention Valentine's Day because it's February and it is associated with "love" but I want the concept of love to be looked at in a different way, not the typical way you would generally find anywhere else.

Right right, that's why I asked. I saw that there wasn't much to actually do with Valentine's Day besides some nonspecific and nontypical concept of love. So I wanted to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding. :XD:

Yeah... would you believe I read the 2-28-13 thing and was like "Why is it not due on the 31st!!!!" *forehead smack* Also this line:

It just has to be something that was never birthed from another living creature.

makes me laugh uncontrollably for some reason...

also for the third person... MC....does that mean main character? (i know... dumb question... sorry >.<)

i just wanted to make sure i was clear ;-)

yes, MC means main character. i like to use that generic term as opposed to protagonist and antagonist because those are a little more loose with definitions as it pertains to who the main character is. some folks might think they "hero" is the main character and should be the protagonist. i find antagonists more interesting but some might not consider them a main character. some rules can be bent to fit the needs of the story and the writer.

Can not having money be a permissible reason if part of the character's challenge is saving it up, but it isn't the main reason he can't have what he wants?

I came up with an eight year old kid who wants a steel samurai sword. His parents said no, he can have it when he's older and can pay for it himself. When he's twelve, he has the money, but his parents still say he can't have it. The main obstacle is really the fact that his parents won't let him have it, the needing money to buy it was their attempt to stall. You have to be 18 to buy the thing, anyway. He's going to go back as an adult, still wanting it, and have a couple more obstacles thrown at him. In the end after going to the store again, finding out it had been sold, then tracking it down to a pawn shop, the shop has closed and it's a dead end.

If you say no, I'm still writing it, but I'll come up with another one for the prompt. :P

Can it be the opportunity to viciously murder someone who wrong the auth--er, character?

(I kid. An inanimate object would be much more interesting to write about. And more challenging.)

Looks like another awesome prompt. :D

i'm hoping to see some really interesting stories from this one.

actually, what you mentioned above isn't out of the question -- i said that concepts are okay. so if someone has an overwhelming desire to murder someone but can't for reasons, that qualifies.

I knew you'd probably accept that. But it's something that the auth--character really needs to stop dwelling on. Inanimate object, it is. Though I might wind up writing both... I suppose I could always do two vignettes. If nothing else, it'd mean writing more.

OH MY GOD I have the perfect character for this prompt this is so going to happen!

*calms down* but seriously, this is a great twist on the whole love thing, and I will definitely try my hand. Living things in the non-animal category are acceptable, yes? Things like carrots or trees?

you are welcome to turn it in whenever it is ready, if it's the 8th, 28th, or a year from now. i do a new prompt at the beginning of every month and generally give everyone the entire month to finish as i think deadlines are good motivators (for some, not for others, as everyone's different and that is cool). but yeah, whenever you are satisfied with it and it's the best you can make it, i will take it.

Good to know. I actually like deadlines, specifically I like to wave as they pass by, but this prompt had a story that spun itself out quickly so I've got something to show for it. :)

i finished my prompt for last month but i've been a lazy bones getting it submitted. i am a bad example! no, not really -- don't they say "walk away" from the thing you wrote for a little bit to come back to it with fresher eyes? he he, that's what i'm doing, yeah! ;-)

i would like to have it submitted soon because i already have this prompt's story plotted out and want to write it, too!

you are now up to date

that depends. if it is attached to another living person or entity, no. however, if we're talking a prosthetic of some kind made from polymers or plastics or stuff from NASA, then yes. if that helps, good. if not, get back to me and we'll work it out more.

I was all like "love blarg" and then got to "inanimate object". A few moments later, once my mind was out of the gutter, I was all "this should be awesome".

That is all.
